Though the educational support services for this program are NSF funded, there are some crucial team-building expenses that cannot be provided by the grant. One of the most effective ways of retaining a student, and ensuring college success, is to create a place where the student feels valued, and a sense of belonging. From best practices at other institutions, we know that there would be great benefits from having:

  • A dedicated study space where Service Scholars can meet with their peer advisor and/or homework tutor, and meet to collaborate on homework – $TODO – Provided by the College of Engineering and Computing
  • “Team” jackets to advertise the program to future students, and to help build identity and cohesion within the cohort – $900 – Donations needed
  • Keurig machine for late night caffeine/cocoa – $120 – Donated by the Brinkman Family
  • Keurig cups – $160 – Donations needed
  • Send 20 students and 2 student peer mentors to the Social Enterprise Cincy Summit – $440 – Donations needed
  • Portable projector – $450 – Lets us take our coding clubs (partnering with Kode2Learn) to more places – Donations needed
  • 5 Sphero 2.0 robots, with 5 iPad Mini 2 tablets – $2200 – App-enabled ball robots to use when teaching coding clubs at local elementary schools, programmable by iPad – Donations needed
  • 3 copies each of Code Monkey Island (age 8+) and Robot Turtles (age 3+) – $200 – These award-winning board games teach kids basic concepts of programming – Donations needed

Of course, we also have some big dreams! We’d love to be able to:

These are the things we are raising money for this year, through #MoveInMiami. Either email me, check Twitter/Facebook on August 20!

Or, if you can’t wait, you can give now through our online giving page.

Of course our biggest dream of all is that the program could continue in the future. Right now we have funding for students that start in August 2015 and students that start in August 2016. After that the grant’s scholarship funds will be exhausted. If you or your company think that this experiment in brining civic engagement to tech is worth continuing, get in touch!
